The County Administrative Board of Halland has now placed a fish camera at Okome in Stockån to monitor what is happening in the river. The camera is located upstream of the dam that previously constituted a migration barrier, but which was partially demolished in 2025 within the Improve Aquatic LIFE project. The measure was implemented to recreate more natural flows and enable free migration paths for fish and other aquatic organisms.
By placing the camera upstream of the former dam, we can now get a better picture of which species are moving both upstream and downstream in the system after the measure. The camera provides valuable knowledge about how well the restoration is working.
The camera provides valuable insights into how well the restoration is working.
The camera does not cover the entire river, but is aimed at a deeper section where fish are likely to pass. This means that it does not capture all the life in the river, but still provides a representative picture of the activity below the surface.
The video stream from the camera is analyzed in real time using a specially trained algorithm. It is designed to record only fish passing in front of the camera, minimizing interference from, for example, solar radiation or movements in underwater vegetation. When a fish passes, information about the passage is saved along with both image and video.
