New fish counter displays results instantly—eight species of fish have already passed through the River Råån

After the City of Helsingborg removed the Görarpsdammen dam on the River Råån in 2025, a new fish counter was installed upstream of the former dam. The removal has created unobstructed migration routes throughout large parts of the water system, and the counter is already showing that fish are beginning to reclaim areas that have long been inaccessible.

A fish counter is now in place upstream of the demolished Görarpsdammen dam on the River Råån. The Görarpsdammen dam was demolished in 2025 by the City of Helsingborg, and now there are unobstructed migration routes throughout large parts of the water system. Before its removal, the Görarp Dam was a migration barrier that only trout and eels could pass upstream.

Among the fish that have already passed through the new fish counter is the ide, a species that has likely not been found upstream of the Görarp Dam since the dam was built nearly 100 years ago.

Despite low flows since its installation, eight fish species have already been recorded by the new fish counter. One of these is the ide, a fish species that has not been found upstream of the Görarp Dam for a long time—probably not since the dam was built nearly 100 years ago.
The results from the new fish counter can be viewed at www.fiskdata.se.
Since there was previously a fish counter in the fish ladder at the Görarp Dam, older data can be compared with data from the new counter. This makes it possible to study changes in the fish’s migration patterns.

For the first time in nearly a hundred years, a fish can swim freely in the River Råån. This fish passed the new fish counter at 12:33 a.m. on June 20, 2026.
