After an old concrete culvert was removed, the Pjältån river outside Norrköping has been given new life. The river has regained its natural flow and the sea trout have started to thrive there once again. A short film clip takes you on a visit – both above and below the surface .

Outside Norrköping, the Pjältån river meanders through a rift valley landscape with deciduous forest, wetlands and occasionally flooded forest. The river flows into Bråviken and is Östergötland’s most important reproduction site for sea trout – but also home to species such as river lamprey, eel and bull head.

In the feature, you can follow how the Pjältån has been given new life after a 60 meter long concrete culvert was removed. The river has regained its natural flow and migration routes for the fish are open once more.

Nature recovers – see it for yourself A short film from the visit to the river provides a unique insight into how quickly nature can regain its strenght when given the right conditions.

Electrofishing shows strong recovery
Biologist Mathias Ibbe at the County Administrative Board of Östergötland is following up the effects of the restoration within the Improve Aquatic LIFE project. Together with students from the natural sciences program at Realgymnasiet in Norrköping, electrofishing is carried out – which is a gentle standardized method for quickly assessing  fish populations.

Pupils from Realgymnasiet’s nature conservation program participated in the electrofishing.

The result is encouraging: a high density of yearlings shows that sea trout are once again thriving in the Pjältån.
