One of the hundreds of projects to be implemented through Improve Aquatic LIFE is the restoration of reefs and the important eelgrass beds in the Kattegat and the Sound.

The coast of Skåne is getting a boost through a project to restore habitats in the Kattegat and Öresund. By reintroducing stone reefs and planting eelgrass, important ecosystems will recover, benefiting fish, seabirds and marine mammals.

Eelgrass beds – important underwater habitats
Eelgrass beds play a crucial role in the marine ecosystem. They provide shelter and nursery grounds for fish, crabs and other animals, while stabilizing the seabed and dampening waves and currents. By reducing erosion and contributing to clearer waters, they also protect coastlines. Eelgrass also absorbs nutrients, helping to combat eutrophication and improve the marine environment.
The project focuses on three Natura 2000 sites, where sandbanks and reefs have been degraded by eutrophication, boat traffic and past rock removal. Measures include rock placement to create new reefs and replanting eelgrass over an area of 1.5 hectares.

Strengthening cod and mussel stocks
Efforts include strengthening stocks of cod, mussels and other marine species, and improving water quality. At the same time, information signs are being erected to prevent boats from anchoring and causing damage to the sensitive bottom structures.

The project is an important part of the work to restore Skåne’s marine environments and create a more sustainable future for the ecosystem in Kattegat and Öresund.
