Improve Aquatic LIFE is the name of one of Europe’s largest aquatic conservation projects to restore aquatic environments and carry out actions in lakes, rivers and coastal waters in nine different counties, mainly in southern Sweden.

Improve Aquatic LIFE is funded by the EU, the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, among others.

In-water measures for red-listed species
Over the seven years of the project, hundreds of different actions will be implemented to strengthen threatened species, as well as restore degraded aquatic habitats for fish and other aquatic animals in rivers and coastal waters. Innovative methods will be used to restore eelgrass beds, waterways and wetlands to help red-listed species.

Restoring habitats strengthens biodiversity and creates access to ecosystem services such as recreation and increased nature tourism.

17 cooperating partners
17 different partners are involved in the project. These are the County Administrative Boards of Värmland, Västra Götaland, Halland, Skåne, Blekinge, Kronoberg, Jönköping, Kalmar and Östergötland, the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, Karlstad University, the University of Gothenburg, Lund University, Helsingborg Municipality, Tingsryd Municipality and Swedish Anglers Association.

Restoring habitats strengthens biodiversity and creates access to ecosystem services such as recreation and increased nature tourism.
Improve Aquatic LIFE is a win-win project with great sustainability values for nature and future generations.
