A four meter high dam <\/strong>is currently being lowered, which is the first step in eliminating the last migration barrier in River R\u00e5\u00e5n. Anna Olsson from the City of Helsingborg met with radio P4 Malm\u00f6hus where she explained the positive effects the restoration measure has on the river ecosystem. <\/strong><\/p>\n

River R\u00e5\u00e5n has suffered greatly for a long time from human impact, with eutrophication, oxygen depletion and fragmentation making life difficult for the ecosystem’s inhabitants. Today, the water quality is better and soon we will have connected the 28-kilometer stretch of the river by tearing out the G\u00f6rarp dam. Weak-swimming species such as river lamprey and stone loach will be able to exploit the full potential of the entire river, and salmon and trout will more easily reach their spawning and nursery areas upstreams. The restoration will give all the river’s inhabitants better opportunities to strengthen their populations. Anna Olsson, water planner at Helsingborg tells radio P4 Malm\u00f6hus about the restoration measure:
\n– We start to lower the water level in the dam then we will restore the stream to its original shape. It will thus look much as it did before the dam was built.<\/p>\n
